Why Wide Plank Flooring? (An Introduction)
There was a time when 5” wide flooring was considered “wide plank” and 7-1/2” wide flooring was considered super wide! With advances in technology, engineered flooring has become more prevalent, and 7-1/2” is the norm, with anything wider truly considered “wide plank.”
Our 7-1/2” wide flooring is the perfect balance, especially with the majority of Allora plank flooring in every box arriving in impressive lengths of nearly 8 feet. But for some spaces – for example, large open living rooms, dining rooms, and commercial spaces – 7-1/2” wide flooring can make the room feel proportionally smaller than 9-1/2” flooring.
What are the Pros of 9-1/2” Wide Plank Flooring?
If your space is large, wide, and open, and you seek a breathtaking and distinctive flooring option, 9-1/2” wide plank flooring is undoubtedly worth considering. Wider planks will mean fewer “joints” or “seams” and therefore, the illusion of a room even larger than appears.
Consider the two squares below – although they are the same size, the one with narrower plank appears visually smaller, whereas the one with wide planks appears larger! This is an example of what you can expect with wider flooring vs. narrower flooring.
What are the Drawbacks of 9-1/2” Wide Plank Flooring?
While wide plank flooring offers numerous benefits, there are a few considerations before choosing it for your home.
Firstly, it tends to be more expensive than traditional narrow plank flooring due to the higher demand, higher cost of the raw materials, and the limited supply of wider-plank veneers.
If your space is smaller, one potential drawback is that wide plank flooring may create the illusion of an even smaller room, with two few joints between planks in a given area. For smaller spaces, our versatile 7-1/2” wide floors may provide a more appropriate aesthetic.
Consider the two diagrams below. In this case, the narrower plank in a smaller place actually makes the shape appear larger than the shape with the wider planks!
A final consideration is that in locations with wide swings in humidity and moisture levels (for example, the very arid climate in Las Vegas), a narrower plank flooring is universally preferred due to the inherent stability of a narrower plank. Regardless of your preference, please make sure to follow all installation instructions for your flooring, making sure a licensed and professional contractor who performs the appropriate tests and subfloor leveling & treatment installs your flooring.
